BEHAVIORAL STRATEGIES for SUCCESS IN BEATING NICOTINE
- Look in the mirror and decide what you like and what you hate about tobacco. Courageously face what tobacco will cost you both now and in the future. Link the negative thoughts to tobacco use and the positive thoughts to quitting and motivation for change. Develop an image of yourself as a non-smoker that is so attractive that you are drawn to it.
- Make a list of your top 3 positive reasons for quitting. Remember these each time you think about smoking. Make a 3x5 card or a pocket-sized symbol that reminds you of your 3 positive reasons for quitting. When cravings occur, pick up that symbol and remember what you want in your life... not what your neuro-receptors want. Cravings only last a few minutes and, whether you smoke or not, they pass. You will survive and be in control.
